Cap Ferret lighthouse: 258 steps to the big picture

Climb up for a bird’s eye view of the bay, Arguin and the Atlantic.

At the tip of Cap Ferret, the lighthouse helps ships navigate the ocean passes. Rebuilt after the Second World War, it stands 53 metres tall; when it’s open, 258 steps take you up to the panorama.

Get your bearings

From above, spot the peninsula, the Dune du Pilat, Arguin and the Atlantic passes. The view makes it easier to understand how the bay and ocean connect—and why the shoreline is always changing.

Check before you climb

Opening hours and access can change, so check current visitor information. The tip has strong currents and unstable ground: keep to marked public routes and away from the edge. If the lighthouse is closed, the surrounding area still gives you a feel for this windswept meeting point.
