Oyster villages: working harbours with serious character

Colourful huts, shallow water boats and a taste of the bay’s oyster culture.

Along the shore, oyster huts, pontoons and pinasses show the working side of the bay. Gujan-Mestras, La Teste, Audenge and the peninsula each have their own harbour and relationship with the tide.

A harbour is not a set

Boats and access change with the water, and people may be working even when things look quiet. Watch from public areas, keep pontoons clear and ask before photographing people.

Taste when invited

Some producers welcome visitors or offer tastings, but openings vary. Check directly before you go, and don’t enter work areas or handle equipment. A little curiosity—and buying from a local producer when they’re open—goes a long way.
