Bird Island’s stilt cabins: the bay’s iconic duo

Two perched cabins, a whole tidal landscape and a view best enjoyed from the water.

In the middle of the bay, Bird Island is best seen from a boat. Its famous stilt cabins are called “cabanes tchanquées”: “tchanqué” comes from Gascon and means perched.

The tide changes the scene

At low tide, channels and oyster beds draw lines across the sand. As the water returns, the cabins seem to float and birds gather on exposed ground. Same landmark, completely different backdrop.

Look, don’t crowd

Nearby mudflats are sensitive habitat. Follow the skipper’s route, keep a respectful distance from birds and only land where current rules allow. The best photo is one that lets the wildlife keep doing its thing.
